Comments from crabbers who, when asked, “In which of the following areas do you do MOST of your fishing activity?” answered,
We Need Docks IN Cameron LA.
Stop breaking the crab claws off the virgin female crabs when the season is closed. Make a law so that we cannot have crab claws on our vessel while commercial crabbing. Instead of having to place a moratorium on a crabber licenses, try doing away with the rake boats. They have increased the amount of traps run in a day by 100's. If they had to pull the traps by hand they would only run 3 or 4 hundred traps a day compared to 1000 to 2000 traps a day, with a rake boat. Like the oyster dredging in Calcasieu Lake, now there's no oyster!!!
Stop blocking off tidal marshes where our seafood can live and grow and let mother nature to do her job!
Note made next to Question #4 under answer choice Calcasieu/Sabine Basin: "Mermentau Basin." In response to Question #34: in Mermentau Basin and River every bayou is stopped up with automatic gates that open with low tide. When we get high tides the tide water cannot get in the marshes and the crabs and shrimp and all kind of seafood cannot get in the marshes. in my opinion I think each bayou along the river should have one open culvert to let the seafood in the marshes to raise [mature]. Because every kind of seafood that comes down the Mermentau goes into the Gulf. The same thing [happens] along the lakes in Cameron along the ship channel. Everything is blocked off.
